| ReviewFor centuries feed has been cooked in earthenware pots over open fires or in brick ovens. Römertopf carries on this tradition by crafting clay pots and dishes specifically intended for cooking a assortment of vegetables, meats, casseroles, and breads in the home oven. Manufactured in Mexico, each vessel is made from unglazed and porous terra cotta containing no lead or cadmium. Before each use, the pot is soaked in water in order to absorb a sure amount of moisture into the permeable clay. This moisture is tardily freed for the duration of cooking, sealing in the natural juices and increasing the flavor and tenderness.
Covered in a bounty of sculpted agricultural motifs, and with a built-in handle, the Römertopf 1/2-quart baker may be used to prepare a little chicken, a meat and vegetable stew, or a casserole for a family of four. Measuring 7-1/2 by 11 inches and standing 6 inches tall, the baker may go straight from the oven to the table and may be applied as a serving dish. Intended to be used only in the oven, Römertopf recommends washing all clay pots by hand. Due to their porous and unglazed nature, the pots will have to not be exposed to uttermost temperature changes. –Lea Werbel

Awesome clay baker! By Val Pavlik I used this item for the first time at Thanksgiving. What a wonderful clay baker it is!! If you’re vegetarian, or vegan, or even if you’re cooking other stuff, this is an amazing “appliance” to have. I made a seitan dish (for those who are not familiar with seitan, it’s a meat substitute that’s really expensive when purchased already prepared, but when you make it at home it’s so cheap, and also extremely tasty. Of course it helped that I had all Bryanna Clark Grogan’s recipes by my side!! [...]
The clay cooker produced an amazing seitan, it was delicious, it retained all its juices, and it had a wonderful crust on the outside that would never have been possible without the clay baker!
I also want to comment on the fact that Amazon has the best price for this clay baker!! Even if you buy it directly from the manufacturer, tne price is not this good!!
I wish I could give it 10 stars!! I also purchased the same clay cooker in a smaller size.
Oh and one more thing, don’t forget to soak your clay baker in water for about 10 – 15 minutes befor you cook in it. You also want to make sure you don’t use any kind of dish washing detergent when you wash it as it soaks in everything!! Just wash with a stiff brush, or even a firm sponge, and lots of water. One more very important tip – never place a hot clay baker on a cold surface. You might break the claypot!

Really, really small By C. Keeney Clay pots are great for chicken but this one would not hold a chicken. This is the size of a bread pan and I’m going to use it for that because they say bread baked in a clay pot is wonderful. I already have a clay pot for chicken but I wanted a smaller one but this one is really too small to cook a chicken in, unless your were just doing pieces of chicken. The actual bottom is only 4 1/2 inches wide by 8 inches long. It does have flared sides though, and that’s why the measurements are listed as being bigger. I will update this when I bake bread in it, because I think it will do bread well.
